On a raging stormy night, the Kurts’ car becomes stranded in the countryside. Without gas, and a fallen tree blocking the isolated dirt road, Liam Kurt (mid 40’s), his wife Emily (mid 40’s) and his son Eric (7) will need to leave their car behind in search for help. After a lengthy and laborious journey through the woods, in the midst of torrential rain, they find refuge at an ominous farm house. They are ushered in by Catherine, a woman in her late 50’s, piously dressed, and with an unfriendly demeanor. She serves them up hot tea and warm clothes, but is solemn with her words, blunt and censorious. Catherine clearly states the strict house rules, which the Kurts’ must follow in order to stay. Within the first night, she’ll separate Liam and Emily from their son, Eric, who is confined to a room with two other children, Lucas (6) and Daniel (10). Another surprise awaits, and in the middle of the night, Liam comes across a sinister houseguest, Layla, who seems to be keeping uncomfortably close tabs on him.

The following morning, the Kurts are introduced to Catherine’s husband, Roger (40’s) — a tall, strapping man, whose temper alternates between Catherine’s rigidity and a faint sense of warmth. The couple begin their religious rituals and abruptly inform the Kurts that all roads are completely closed off and flooded. However, as the days pass and the rain subsides, the Kurts will soon realize that leaving is not a part of their hosts’ endgame. The hospitable tea their hosts have so routinely served them, have seemed to have an alarming affect on them.

Afraid of losing his family and his own grasp of the world, Liam will set a plan in motion to flee and save the remnants of his sanity and his family.
